Goal setting:
In coaching, setting goals is very important. We need to have realistic and manageable goals. When people start goal-setting, they usually stumble on one of two points. The first point is that the goals they set themselves are wholly unrealistic. I will elaborate on this below. The second point is that the client simply gets bored along the way and then the motivation is gone and the goals they have set simply become redundant.
Setting Goals:
When working with clients, we take into account many factors of their life, from family and friends to the social life they lead. I encourage my clients to start setting goals outside their “comfort zone” which many coaches call “some day island”. The normal excuses I hear include, ‘I don’t think I can do that!’ ‘I will have that one day!’, ‘It’s beyond my reach’ and the classic ‘I’m not sure if my partner would be happy for me to do that!’
We all have our own direction which leads us to our own destiny. Although we love our loved ones, we cannot always allow ourselves to be moulded by their wishes and desires. When we do this, we lose our direction and this lowers our self-esteem.

The Road to Failures-Vale:
Failures-Vale is not that far from Some Day Island. We spend a lot of our time worrying about how we are going to achieve the goals in our lives. In order to achieve them, it is important to replace that worry with, ‘I am going to achieve that goal!’
When I work with clients, at the start of the session, I ask what barriers have been blocking the road to Bliss-Vale? Many times, it starts out that someone else is the cause, so half-way through the session, we review the goal-setting process. Based on the S.I.M Theory, the mirror is showing that only one person has the power to change everything in their life, and that person is you.
How long does it take?
That depends on the results you want to achieve and these can be varied. Some can be set and achieved in a matter of days or even weeks. Others may take significantly longer. The process is not a race, however and the important point of the goal-setting, is you ultimately achieve your goal!
In the true form of goal-setting and really achieving your fundamental goal, it is important to understand, as we move down the path exactly how and why we have reached this point. Reflection is also key, as is history, especially when achieving your goal is paramount for self-growth.
